Invite Your Elected Officials
The Alberta Museums Association (AMA) is encouraging
Institutional Members to invite their elected officials to visit
their museums, whether in person or virtually, in order to showcase
how museums are leading contributors to the social, cultural, and
educational fabric of Alberta.
A key goal of the #MeetYourMuseum campaign is to
increase the awareness with all government representatives of the
importance and value of museums to their communities. Whether the
invitation is for an in-person experience or a virtual one,
directly engaging your elected officials is an excellent way to
communicate our sector's value, especially as museums adapt in
these difficult times.
Unsure of what to highlight in your invitation? Consider:
- Offering a special "behind the scenes" tour of an exhibit or
collections area
- Providing them with a customized invitation to an existing
onsite or online event
- Inviting them to take part in one of your educational programs
or digital initiatives
The AMA has created template letters that your museum can use.
Please feel free to add to or edit them to customize your museum's
specific invitation.
We encourage you to reach out to your elected officials at their
constituency office early, as summer can be a busy time and
itineraries can fill up quickly. Invite your MLAs, MPs, and
municipal officials to visit; the museum sector benefits with broad
public engagement!
